    Description
    The Senior Research Specialist independently manage and perform a wide range of highly technical and complex research and laboratory tests and procedures in support of developing mRNA-based therapeutics and preventatives in the areas of influenza, RSV, SIV/HIV and/or COVID.



    Specifically, this position will:

    Serve as lead support on 6 mRNA lab projects.
    Perform animal research on mice, hamsters and ferrets.
    Administer anesthesia by inhalation and injection, and infection by intranasal delivery.
    Deliver IVT mRNA by nebulization, IV injection, IM injection.
    Evaluate delivery, and weigh animals for long-term infection studies.
    Weigh animals for long-term infection studies.
    Manage mRNA for lab projects.
    Synthesize all mRNA through in vitro transcription for use in all lab experiments.
    Design, order, and organize new constructs.
    Maintain plasmid and glycerol stocks.
    Produce all mRNA requested internally and externally.
    Ensure stocks of frequently used mRNAs are kept in enough quantity.
    Test mRNA for expression through IHC, ELISA, luminescent assay, qPCR.
    Present results of testing through Prism charts.
    Qualify mRNA through electrophoresis gel, capping assay.
    Test improvements to our mRNA production to increase expression- modified tails, UTRs, codon optimization.
    Ship mRNA to collaborators worldwide.
    Manage resources for lab projects.
    Utilize Freezerworks laboratory information management system to manage inventory.
    Manage stocks of mRNA including lot numbers, concentrations, amounts and location in freezer.
    Coordinate with Infocore at University of Georgia to maintain the database.
    Order, receive, and organize lab consumables.
    Order, receive, and organize all raw materials for mRNA production- approximately $150,000 of material per year.
    Ensure liquid nitrogen and CO2 tanks are ordered, stored in the lab and keep dewar full for cell culture and virus stocks.
    Wash and autoclave glassware.


    JOB DESCRIPTION:

    Devises highly specialized research procedures by applying a knowledge of advanced research techniques and equipment.
    Provides input to protocol development.
    Serves as a technical resource for other research personnel. Analyzes and interprets the results of studies.
    Investigates and recommends alternative approaches to improve the quality of results.
    Trains research staff in specialized procedures and theoretical concepts for unique tests.
    Recommends new equipment and supplies needed for specialized procedures.
    Provides input into the development of departmental goals and objectives.
    May assist in grant and other funding application preparation.
    Review literature for related research developments and techniques.
    Prepares written materials, charts and graphs on specialized techniques and research results for publication or presentation.
    Oversees quality assurance of research performed by others.
    Monitors the handling, storage and disposal of hazardous substances.
    Performs related responsibilities as required.
    Employees in this classification may be required to work with, take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    Bachelor's degree in a scientific field and four years of research experience, OR equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.
    NOTE: Position tasks are generally required to be performed in-person at an Emory University location. Remote work from home day options may be granted at department discretion. Emory reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee.
