Roanoke College's new mascot lands on campus

The college mascot exited his limousine Friday afternoon, warmed up the crowd with a few splits, then karate-kicked a banner that read "Go Rooney Go."

"Is that a pterodactyl?" one woman asked.

No, it was Rooney the Hawk, Roanoke College's first official mascot. The school has lacked a representative to cheer on its sports teams, the Maroons, since it was founded in 1842. At least until Friday, when the bird flapped onto campus for the first time.
